Black soapstone is a charcoal to green-black natural stone with soft white and gray veins. It has a smooth, velvety feel.
Soapstone is a dense natural stone that is non-porous, so it does not absorb stains and does not need sealing. It handles heat very well. It is softer than granite, so it can scratch, but small scratches can be sanded out or blended with mineral oil.
Soapstone darkens with mineral oil, and many owners oil it every few weeks at first to get a deep, even color.
It looks great in farmhouse and traditional kitchens with white or cream cabinets and apron-front sinks.

No. Soapstone is non-porous and does not need sealing. Many owners use mineral oil to darken it, but that is for looks, not protection.
